Globular Cluster FIVR2 Review: A Great Solution Looking for a Problem?

If you own a PSVR2, you already know my stance on Globular Cluster. Their CMP2 Comfort Mod is, without hesitation, the single most important accessory you can buy for the headset. It turned a torture device into a cloud.

So when the team reached out to send me their latest creation, the FIVR2 Magnetic Facial Interface Bracket, I said yes immediately. I expected another game-changer.

What I got instead was a well-engineered accessory that leaves me asking one big question: Why?

How the FIVR2 Magnetic Bracket Works

The FIVR2 is a magnetic bracket system that modifies your existing PSVR2 setup rather than replacing it outright. It acts as a magnetic bridge between the headset and your face pad.

The installation requires a bit of assembly since you are modifying the stock part. You snap a magnetic base into the headset itself, and then you attach your original stock facial interface to a matching magnetic bracket. Once installed, it allows you to magnetically snap your existing face pad on and off in seconds, rather than dealing with the fiddly plastic clips of the stock design.

As expected from Globular Cluster, the engineering is solid. The magnets are strong, and the interface doesn’t wobble or fall off during rapid head movements.

Using PSVR2 in ‘Open Face’ Mode with FIVR2.”

The headline feature here is the ability to easily remove the facial interface entirely and use the headset in “open mode.” Because the PSVR2 uses a “halo” strap design (especially if you have the CMP2 mod installed), the headset can technically float in front of your eyes without resting on your face.

This is a massive trade-off. On one hand, you get zero face pressure and maximum airflow, meaning your lenses will absolutely never fog up. You also get peripheral vision to see your feet, which helps with orientation.

On the other hand, it is an immersion killer. The PSVR2’s greatest strength is its OLED panels and deep blacks. By removing the light shield, you flood the lenses with real-world light. The “inky blacks” of Resident Evil Village instantly turn into washed-out greys. Worse, any light source in your room reflects off the lenses, creating distracting glare spots that ruin the image.

Is the FIVR2 Good for PSVR2 Hygiene?

The other argument for a magnetic bracket is hygiene. If you have multiple face pads (perhaps a spare stock one), you could swap them out between users instantly.

However, unless you bought a second OEM interface specifically for this purpose, swapping feels like an edge case. For most home users, simply wiping down the silicone pad is faster than swapping the entire magnetic assembly.

Pros & Cons

  • Zero Face Pressure: Ideal for users who hate the feeling of a mask on their face.
  • Maximum Airflow: Impossible to fog up the lenses in “open” mode.
  • Solid Engineering: The magnets are strong, and the bracket fits perfectly.
  • Peripheral Awareness: Allows you to see your surroundings while playing.
  • Ruins Immersion: Light leakage destroys the contrast of the OLED panels.
  • Glare Issues: External light sources create bad reflections on the lenses.
  • Niche Utility: Most players do not need to remove their face pads regularly.
  • Requires Assembly: You have to modify your stock interface to make it work.

Verdict

The FIVR2 suffers from being a solution to a problem most people don’t have.

If you are a fitness enthusiast who plays Les Mills Bodycombat and needs maximum airflow to prevent sweat and fog, this might be useful. If you are a content creator who needs to see your monitor while wearing the headset, the “open” design has merit.

But for the 99% of gamers who just want to play Horizon or Gran Turismo 7, removing the light shield actively makes the experience worse by ruining the contrast of those beautiful OLED screens.

Should you buy it? Stick to the Globular Cluster CMP2 Comfort Mod. That is the essential upgrade. The FIVR2 is a well-made curiosity, but unless you are desperate for airflow, you can safely skip it.
