Forefront Review: The Ultimate VR Shooter

Forefront VR recently launched out of Early Access on Meta Quest and PCVR, with PSVR2 coming later in 2026. From Triangle Factory, the developers of Breachers, Forefront attempts to capture the Battlefield formula in VR for the first time. Can it deliver on such a big promise?

Gameplay & Mechanics

Forefront attempts to capture the magic of Battlefield. That means large-scale battles, vehicle and infantry combat, destructible environments, and more. While I initially had my concerns that a game running on Meta Quest 3 standalone would be able to deliver, I was thoroughly shocked.

Forefront scales the player count back a tad with 16v16 player lobbies, but given you are actually IN the game, it feels almost as lively as a Battlefield 6 server. Combat is intense and responsive, vehicles are dangerous and varied, and the destructible environments give the same type of random gameplay that makes Battlefield so fun. One moment, you are hiding from a sniper in a barn, the next, an enemy tank literally drives down the front door.

What Works?

  • Delivers on its Battlefield-inspired promise
  • Gunplay is responsive while remaining fun and accessible
  • Variety in gameplay with a healthy amount of weapons, maps, and vehicles to try out

What Doesn’t?

  • Some performance issues here and there, random slowdowns or lag spikes impact servers at least once a match
  • Progression could be improved. The current iteration makes it difficult for casual players to unlock new gear.

Visuals & Performance

While I have not gotten my hands on the PCVR version of the game, the Meta Quest version is honestly impressive considering the scale. Sure, graphics are certainly not the most immersive in VR, and there are still some small performance issues that need to be worked out, but the game is impressive. Very few VR games are able to deliver a cohesive multiplayer experience with a good progression system to keep players coming back. Forefront delivers this with one of the largest-scale VR games released to date. 16v16 with vehicles and destruction makes it easy to give them some leeway.

The Final Verdict

Forefront VR not only delivers on its promise to deliver a Battlefield-like experience in Virtual Reality. It is simply the best VR shooter I have ever played. The gameplay is fun, the battles intense, and the developers truly seem to care about this game. Updates have been coming regularly, and they prove time and time again that they listen to player feedback.
