XREAL Aura vs Meta VR Glasses: Early Comparison
Early comparison. Neither of these devices has shipped yet. Everything below is based on officially announced specs from XREAL and Meta, not hands-on testing. This page will be updated with real testing impressions once both are in hand.
Two glasses-style XR devices. The same flagship chip. Prices $20 apart. And completely opposite ideas about what extended reality should be.
XREAL just opened Aura pre-orders for reservation holders, with shipping expected within weeks. Meta unveiled its VR Glasses at Connect 2026, shipping spring 2027. Both split compute into a pocket puck. Both cost around $1,300. But one shows you the real world through glass, and the other recreates it on screens. That single choice shapes everything else.

The big differences
Same chip, opposite philosophy
Both devices run Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Reality Elite, and both move compute off your face into a pocket puck. That is where the similarities end. Aura uses optical see-through birdbath optics: you look at the actual real world through transparent lenses, with digital content overlaid. Meta’s glasses use pancake lenses and full-color passthrough: cameras capture the world and recreate it on micro-OLED screens. Optical see-through keeps you connected to reality with zero latency on the real world. Passthrough gives richer, more controlled visuals at the cost of seeing reality through cameras. There is no objectively right answer here; it is the deepest philosophical split in XR right now.
Ecosystem: open Android vs the Quest library
Aura runs Android XR with the Google Play Store, which means the entire Android app catalog plus XR-native apps and Gemini woven through the OS. Meta’s glasses run Horizon OS, the same system as Quest, with the full Quest store and 75+ VR games confirmed for day one. If you want a spatial computer that runs your phone apps, Aura’s pitch is stronger. If you want the deepest VR game library on day one, Meta’s is. Your existing investment matters: Quest owners keep their libraries on Meta’s glasses; Android users get continuity on Aura.
Timing: now vs spring
Aura is shipping within weeks to reservation holders, with general availability to follow. Meta’s glasses arrive spring 2027. That is roughly a six-month head start for XREAL, which matters in a category this new. Early adopters who want in now have exactly one option. Everyone else gets to watch Aura’s launch, read real reviews, and decide whether Meta’s spring device is worth the wait.
Input: hands vs eyes
Aura bets on hand tracking with three outward cameras and no controllers. Meta bets on a trio of eye tracking, hand tracking, and voice, with Meta AI built directly into the OS, and keeps Touch Plus controllers as a paid add-on for gamers. For productivity and media, both approaches work. For gaming, Meta’s controller compatibility is the safer bet until hand tracking matures further.
Which should you get?
Neither has shipped, so this is a pre-order decision, not a tested recommendation. Based on announced specs:
Get the XREAL Aura if you want in now, you live in Android and Google’s ecosystem, and you prefer seeing the real world through glass rather than cameras. The Play Store catalog and Gemini integration are its biggest structural advantages.
Wait for Meta VR Glasses if you are invested in the Quest library, you want the sharpest displays (37 PPD is a serious number), or you prefer Meta’s Horizon OS and Meta AI. Spring 2027 also means you get to see how Aura actually reviews before committing.
This page will be updated with hands-on testing impressions once both devices are available.
Frequently asked questions
When does the XREAL Aura ship?
XREAL opened pre-orders for reservation holders in October 2026, with shipping expected within weeks. Initial markets are the US, Canada, Japan, and South Korea, with more regions in 2027.
When do Meta VR Glasses release?
Spring 2027, priced at $1,299.99. Meta announced them at Connect 2026 on September 23.
Do either of these need a phone or PC?
No. Both are self-contained: the glasses tether to a compute puck that handles processing, battery, and storage. No phone or PC required.
Can they play VR games?
Meta’s glasses run Horizon OS with the Quest store and 75+ VR games confirmed for day one, plus optional Touch Plus controllers. Aura runs Android XR with the Play Store; its gaming story centers on Android and XR-native titles rather than a console-style VR library.
Which has the better display?
On paper, Meta’s: 2412×2288 per eye at 37 pixels per degree through pancake lenses vs Aura’s 1920×1200 through birdbath optics. But display quality also depends on optics, brightness, and real-world tuning, none of which can be judged until both ship.
