The verdict
While the Meta Quest 3S is the absolute best value in VR, the Meta Quest 3’s pancake lenses are worth the upgrade. If you’re looking for the best standalone VR experience, the Quest 3 easily wins. If you are on a budget though, you can do everything the Quest 3 can on the 3S, just with slightly worse visuals and comfort.

The differences that actually matter
Same chip, same game library. These are the things you’ll notice every time you put the headset on.
Lenses & optics: pancake vs fresnel
Fresnel lenses are last gen tech, and it feels like it. Keeping a sweet spot is annoying, and reading text is a nightmare. Pancake lenses fix all of these issues with edge to edge clarity and far sharper images. This is easily the biggest upgrade in VR since inside out tracking.
Performance: same chip, different experience
Since the two devices use the same internal chip set, the only real difference in performance is FOV and sharpness are far better on Quest 3. Surprisingly, thanks to the downgrades on screen for Quest 3S, you may actually end up with slightly better battery life on the lower end unit.
Price-to-performance: the ~$250 gap
While the two headsets have similar performance, the lens and screen upgrade of Quest 3 just can’t be understated. If you can afford the Quest 3, definitely splurge for it. Otherwise, the Quest 3S is still a solid buy with similar performance even if it takes a visual and comfort hit.

Buy the Quest 3S if you are looking to purchase your first headset, or you need to stick to a budget. You’ll get all of the features of the Quest 3 with just a few small trade offs.
What about waiting?
With Steam Frame and Meta VR Glasses now announced, there are tons of options out there. That said, they are ALL over $1,000, and in the case of the Steam Frame, not even a true upgrade over what the Quest 3 delivers today. 2026 is a perfect time to jump into VR, and Quest 3 is still my preferred way to do so.

No! The Quest 3S has the same features and performance as the Quest 3, but with a slightly worse screen and last generation lenses. Think of it as a Quest 2 with the Quest 3’s brains.
Can the 3S play the same games?
Yes! The Quest 3S can play and do all of the same things as the Quest 3.
Which is better for kids?
Given the price, definitely choose the Quest 3S for kids. No children under 10 years old should use VR due to developing eyes and brains, but children old enough will be better suited for the cheaper device in case of accidents.
Should I upgrade from Quest 2?
I personally think so! Quest 2 was an awesome device, but modern games are no longer arriving to the system, and sooner or later, the Quest 2 will be sunset for continued support like the Quest 1 was.
